ABOUT

Joel de Candio is a New York-based actor working internationally in theatre and film. Extremely passionate about independent filmmaking, arthouse cinema, and work outside of the Anglo-American sphere, he made his film debut starring in Kenya Gillespie's 16 mm tone poem Give (Official Selection: Aesthetica 2023; Jury Prize: Kashish Mumbai 2024; Best International: New Renaissance Amsterdam 2024), followed by He Won't Belong (Official Selection: Tacoma Film Festival 2023), All the Rest Is Noise (PHYNEfilms, Berlin), and Delicious (Official Selection: Austin Film Festival 2024; New York Latino Film Festival 2024). He has recently wrapped shooting on Fixed Memory and the psychological thriller Stickup. Prior to his work in film, he appeared on stage in multiple productions of Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream and The Tragedy of Cymbeline, as well as The Tempest, Twelfth Night at Folger Shakespeare Theatre, Tennessee Williams' The Rose Tattoo, and The Tragedy of Antony & Cleopatra with the National Theatre of Ghana and artists of the Ankara State Theatre in Turkey.

 

In addition to his work as an actor, Joel has served as both a creative consultant and producer on films like Catalina (Official Selection: Outfest and NewFest) and Transumanza (Repubblica Italiana, post-production). An accomplished pianist and vocalist, he is the curator for The Sondheim Sessions—a live series in New York City celebrating the music of Stephen Sondheim. Outside of his work, he is an active swimmer and boxer.
